On teaching

I teach photography and digital imaging at the Academies of Fine Arts in Perugia and Catania. What I try to do in a course is not to point the way, but to make sure each student finds their own.

In practice this means working by projects. Each student starts from a question of their own and carries it to a finished form — a sequence, a print, a dummy, a small exhibition. Technique comes in when the project asks for it: colour management, printing, file workflow, even the basics of computing are taught as tools of a body of work, not as subjects in themselves. Individual tutorials alternate with group critiques, because learning to read someone else’s work is the quickest way to see one’s own.

The method has a history. From 2010 to 2019 I directed Corsobasedifotografia.it, a network of foundation courses in eighteen venues across Italy, built on a shared method and taught by a team of instructors I trained and coordinated; from 2015 to 2018 I directed a three-year school of professional photography in Reggio Calabria. I have taught for Leica Akademie, EIZO Color Academy and Fujifilm, and lectured on book design and storytelling at Columbia College Chicago.

Part of the teaching lives outside the classroom: two short manuals, Piccolo manuale teorico-pratico di fotografia di paesaggio and Riflessioni in ordine sparso sulla fotografia, open video lessons, and online courses on Udemy that my students can take free of charge. They exist so that students can return to things at their own pace, and so that what happens in a course does not end with it.
